12.4 John Brown

John Brown was a religious abolitionist who led an unsuccessful raid on Harper’s Ferry Federal Arsenal to attempt to arm a slave uprising 2 years before the Civil War.  Some people (especially abolitionist northerners) thought he was a hero, others (especially southerners who believed in continuing slavery but also some northerners) thought he was a ‘misguided fanatic’.

Examine docs A and B then answer the guiding questions to gain a better understanding of perspectives on slavery and what people were willing to do about it before the Civil War.

Remember, Key Concept 5.2 is the idea that economic, political, and cultural issues related to slavery intensified sectional tensions that led to the Civil War.
